Virginia holds on to win streak; Iowa State upsets W. Virginia

OSU’s Mitchell scores way into women’s history

- FROM JOURNAL WIRES No. 10 TEXAS TECH 73, TEXAS 71: In Lubbock, Texas, Keenan Evans

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, Va. — Kyle Guy scored 22 points and No. 2 Virginia held off hot-shooting Louisville to win its 13th straight, 74-64 on Wednesday night.

Ty Jerome added 16 points and Devon Hall 12 for the Cavaliers (21-1, 10-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Virginia’s start is its best in ACC play since the 1980-81 team won its first 12 games. The winning streak is its longest since winning 19 in a row to begin the 201415 season.

Ray Spalding scored 16 points and Deng Adel had 15 points for the Cardinals (16-6, 6-3). Louisville made nine of 10 shots at one point down the stretch, closing to 62-57 on a long 3-pointer by Ryan McMahon with 3:44 left, but Jerome answered with back-to-back 3s for the Cavaliers. No. 3 PURDUE 75, MARYLAND 67: In West Lafayette, Ind., Isaac Haas had 20 points and nine rebounds, Carsen Edwards scored 17 points and Purdue pulled away from Maryland to extend the nation’s longest active winning streak to 18.

The Boilermake­rs (22-2, 11-0 Big Ten) also continued their best conference start in school history, broke another school record with their 13th consecutiv­e win over a league foe and still won their 21st straight home game. Only Cincinnati (38) has a longer home-court streak.

No. 5 MICHIGAN STATE 76, PENN

STATE 68: In East Lansing, Mich., Miles Bridges had 23 points and nine rebounds, helping Michigan State come back from a double-digit deficit to beat Penn State.

The Spartans (21-3, 9-2 Big Ten) rallied to win after trailing by 12 with 15:23 left after coming back from 13-point deficit to win their previous game at Maryland. No. 8 CINCINNATI 80, HOUSTON 70: In Highland Heights, Ky., Jacob Evans III scored 18 points, hitting the pivotal shots during Cincinnati’s rally from an 18-point deficit, and the Bearcats extended the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak (38) by beating Houston.

After trailing 33-15, the Bearcats (20-2, 9-0 American Athletic) closed out the first half with a flourish that featured Evans’ steal and banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer. His 3 gave Cincinnati its first lead of the second half.

No. 9 ARIZONA 100, WASHINGTON STATE 72: In Pullman, Wash., Deandre Ayton scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Allonzo Trier added 24 points as Arizona beat cold-shooting Washington State to remain in first place in the Pac-12.

Rawle Alkins scored 16 points for Arizona (19-4, 9-1 Pac-12), which has won seven games in a row. The Wildcats have lost just one time since Nov. 24. scored a career-high 38 points, including the winning jumper to beat the buzzer in overtime, as Texas Tech beat Texas.

After missing a potential winning free throw with 3.4 seconds left in regulation, Evans scored six points in overtime. His winning 18-foot jumper from atop the key came after the Longhorns tied the game on a banked 3-pointer by Kerwin Roach. IOWA STATE 93, No. 15 WEST VIRGINIA 77: In Ames, Iowa, Donovan Jackson scored 25 points, Lindell Wigginton added 22 and Iowa State upset West Virginia, sending the shorthande­d Mountainee­rs to their fifth loss in six games. No. 18 TENNESSEE 84, LSU 61: In Knoxville, Tenn., James Daniel III scored 17 points off the bench to continue his recent surge as Tennessee trounced LSU for its fourth consecutiv­e victory.

WYOMING 91, COLORADO STATE

86 (2 OT): In Fort Collins, Colo., Hayden Dalton scored 26 points, Justin James had 25 points and 10 rebounds as Wyoming beat Colorado State (1014, 3-8 MWC) in double overtime.

Wyoming (15-7, 6-3) played three overtime periods last week, and Wednesday’s contest was its sixth overtime game this season. UNLV 76, SAN JOSE STATE 67: In Las Vegas, Nev., Brandon McCoy led UNLV (16-6, 5-4 MWC) with 22 points, Jordan Johnson added 15 points with six assists, and the Runnin’ Rebels came back from in the second half to overcome the Spartans (3-18, 0-10).

NEVADA 102, FRESNO STATE 92: In Reno, Nev., Cody Martin had 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Caleb Martin scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half as Nevada (19-4, 8-1 MWC) beat Fresno State (15-8, 5-5) for its 16th straight home victory.

Women

No. 3 BAYLOR 77, No. 23 OKLAHOMA STATE 64: In Waco, Texas, Lauren Cox scored 23 points and had nine rebounds, Kalani Brown added 19 points with 18 rebounds, and Baylor beat Oklahoma State.

The Lady Bears (20-1, 10-0 Big 12) never trailed while winning their 17th straight game, but couldn’t shake the Cowgirls until a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter that included a pair of 3-pointers by Natalie Chou.

No. 8 TEXAS 55, KANSAS 41: In Lawrence, Kan., Ariel Atkins had 16 points, Brooke McCarty added 13 and Texas pulled away late in a victory over Kansas.

No. 18 OHIO STATE 94, PENN

STATE 64: In Columbus, Ohio, Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points to move into fourth in NCAA history and Stephanie Mavunga and Linnae Harper had double-doubles to lead Ohio State past Penn State.
