TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY MEGAN BENNETT JOURNAL NORTH

A new photography exhibition pays homage to the year 1968, a year of upheaval. Monroe Gallery will be showing more than 50 images from five decades ago, from a year that saw social uprisings for civil rights, gay rights and feminism, the denouement of Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and an ongoing Vietnam War. The gallery describes ’68 as a time of “change in public attitudes and beliefs.” Photos include images from King’s Memphis hotel room after he was shot and from Chicago during the riotous Democratic National Convention. “1968: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today” opens tonight at the gallery, 112 Don Gaspar, and will stay up until April 15.

REMARKABLE DOLLS: Carved figures from the Hopi tribe known not just for their beauty, but also for what they represent, will be at the center of a special exhibition opening at the Adobe Gallery tonight. Katsina dolls, more widely known as “kachinas,” were created to show dancers from spiritual ceremonies, and to teach Hopi women about their religion and the katsina spirits. The gallery will also feature some figures from Zuni Pueblo. “Rare and Remarkable Katsina Dolls” will be open at the Adobe Gallery, 221 Canyon Road, until April 1.

PROJECTING YOUR PASSION: The second installment of a local program combining discussions on science and art will delve into the particulars of holograms. The LASER discussion tonight at Santa Fe Community College, 6401 Richards Ave., will feature speakers Rebecca Deem and Fred Unterseher, Santa Feans who began working with holography as an artistic medium more than four decades ago. Unterseher helped start the Santa Fe School of Holography and, together with Deem in the 1990s, opened a holographic art studio. Deem describes the medium as the “bridge” between art and technology. The free discussion will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
