Women: New Mexico at Boise State
Today, 7 p.m., Taco Bell Arena, Boise, Idaho. Radio: 610 AM/95.9 FM
What you need to know about New Mexico: The Lobos outran Boise State in a 100-83 home victory last month, but they’ll likely need a better defensive effort to complete a season sweep. Boise State has a potent combination of height and 3-point shooting, which can create matchup problems for the guard-oriented Lobos. Boise State shot 50 percent from the field and hit 12 3-pointers in Albuquerque last month but committed 18 turnovers leading to 31 UNM fast-break points. Look for the Lobos to pressure the Broncos’ guards as much as possible again tonight. Freshmen Jasmine Smith (concussion) and Antonia Anderson (knee) are likely to miss a fourth straight game, but Bryan and Burleson have made the most of extended minutes recently. What you need to know about Boise State: The Broncos, preseason picks to win the Mountain West, continue to be erratic — especially at home where they are just 7-5. Boise State’s last four games include a home loss to Nevada, a 112-80 romp at San Jose State, a 49-46 nail-biter at home against Air Force, and a blowout loss at UNLV. Despite its bipolar performances, Boise State remains one of the MWC’s most talented teams, and Lupfer is the league’s best perimeter shooter. She recently broke BSU’s single-season record for 3-point baskets (she has 83) and shoots 46 percent from long range. The Broncos lead the Mountain West in rebounding margin (plus 6.8 per game) but were outrebounded 36-33 in a Jan. 3 loss at UNM.
