How the Aggies and Lobos match up

-

Today, Dreamstyle Arena - the Pit, 7 p.m. Online: TheMW.com. Radio: 770 AM/94.5 FM. Odds: UNM by 4.

What you need to know about the Aggies: Utah State remains dangerous from beyond the arc with shooters all over the court, none more dangerous than McEwen and Merrill. USU ranks second in the league, behind only UNM, in percentage of points during league play scored on 3-pointers. The Aggies get 39.2 percent of their points from beyond the arc. When the two teams played Jan. 31 in Logan, UNM was short-handed, trying to avoid foul trouble and played more zone (14 possessions) than in the rest of the season combined. It worked in small doses, but not for long stretches. The Lobos will likely mix in zone in this rematch, but not for more than a possession or two at a time.

What you need to know about the Lobos: This game marks the first time since Jan. 3 that all 10 available scholarship players (Connor MacDougall redshirting this season is not included in that number) will be on the Lobos bench ready to play. Now we find out if that’s a good thing. Mixing new players into, or back into, the rotation hasn’t exactly proven very successful over the past two weeks for UNM. Some of the team’s best basketball this season was with players out due to suspension, injury or other reasons. One such game was when these two teams played Jan. 31 in Logan and, despite having just six scholarship players available, the Lobos were within three points in the final minute.
