Lobo women stand fourth in MWC golf
Aggies three shots behind front-runner Seattle in WAC tournament
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in fourth place in a nine-team field after two rounds of the Mountain West Conference tournament.
The Lobos shot 12-over-par 300 on Tuesday at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course, which places them 22-over 598 for two rounds. UNLV is in the lead at 2-over and San Diego State second at 14-over.
The final round of the tournament is today.
UNM’s two seniors are leading the way. Alexandra Moisand shot par-72 on Tuesday and rose five spots in the standings to tie four other golfers for sixth place, her 2-over for the tourney five shots off the pace set by Milagros Chaves of San Diego State.
The Lobos’ Ingrid Gutierrez is a shot behind Moisand at 3-over 147. She shot 76 on Tuesday and tumbled from a tie for second.
Lobos Reva Morris and Caroline Jansson are tied at 8-over, and Darian Zachek is 13-over after a second-round 81.
In Phoenix, Pun Chanachai and the rest of the New Mexico State women have work ahead during today’s final round if they are to successfully defend their titles.
The Aggies, four-time defending team champions, shot 4-over 288 Tuesday at the par-71 Legacy Golf Resort course and, at 10-over for the event, are three shots behind leader Seattle. Grand Canyon, the first-round leader, shot 295 Tuesday and is two shots behind the Aggies.
NMSU’s Chanachai, the reigning individual champ, shot a tournament-best 69 in the second round and is 1-over through two rounds. That is good for second place behind Grand Canyon’s Sirapatsorn Patchana.
BASEBALL: In Las Cruces, freshman Nick Gonzalez went 5-for-5 and teammate Caleb Henderson drove in four runs for New Mexico State (24-13), which won 14-8 over Sul Ross State (19-15) in a game that featured 34 hits and 14 pitchers.
