The man and woman accused of trafficking and abusing a 7-year-old are indicted.

The man and woman accused in a case alleging a 7-year-old girl was trafficked and abused were indicted Thursday on several charges.

James Stewart, 37, is now facing 14 counts, which include promoting prostitution, criminal sexual contact with a minor, trafficking a child and seven counts of child abuse.

According to the indictment, Stewart is accused of trafficking the girl, making her pickpocket and forcing her to touch adults in a sexual way. He is also accused of breaking her glasses, pushing her off her bike, selling her clothes, and failing to feed and bathe her.

Teri Sanchez, 37, is charged with five counts of child abuse and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. According to the indictment, Sanchez is accused of hitting and slapping the girl, selling her clothing, and failing to feed and bathe her.

If convicted on all of those charges, Stewart faces up to 84 years in prison and Sanchez faces up to 16½ years, according to the indictments.

An Albuquerque judge ruled on Tuesday that Sanchez and Stewart will remain in the county jail as they await trial on those charges.

During a detention hearing, a teacher testified that she sent clean clothing home with the 7-year-old, who routinely came to school dirty and wearing soiled clothes, and the girl later told the teacher that her parents sold them. The child and her siblings are in state Children, Youth and Families Department custody.

Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a statement that his office will “continue to move forward seeking justice in this important case.”
