A LOOK BACK AT THE TOP SPORTS STORIES IN NORTHERN NM TRACK

TIGERS TAKE THE TITLES: It was Taos times two in the Class 4A meet that ended Saturday with the Tigers sweeping the boys and girls titles. For the boys, who were led by sprinter extraordin­aire Jonah Vigil – a four-event individual champ and record-setter in the 400-meter dash — it was a fifth consecutiv­e blue trophy. While Vigil grabbed the headlines with his recordsett­ing victory in the 400 (47.01 in the preliminar­ies), as well victories in the 100 (11.05 seconds), 200 (22.07) and long jump (23-2¾), Miguel Coca of West Las Vegas swept the distance events: 800 run (1:56.18), 1,600 run (4:24.50) and 3,200 run (9.51.83).

Other area gold medalists were:

5A boys: Elijah Vasquez, Los

Alamos, 800 run 1:56.70.

STATE CHAMPS!:

Mora earned its first state championsh­ip on the diamond last Friday, whipping top-seed Mesilla Valley 12-2 in five innings in the Class 1A-2A title game. Pitcher James Branch tossed a complete-game fourhitter to lead the way.

SIGNED UP: Robertson tennis player Jaci Fulgenzi has signed to play at Western New Mexico University in Silver City.

UPCOMING THINGS TO SEE OR DO

CYCLING: The first Taos Bike Rodeo, for all ages and biking abilities, will be held Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Taos Eco Park to help celebrate National Bike Month. Skill-building activities, cycling games and rules of the road lessons will be provided by Field Institute of Taos coaches and instructor­s. A limited number of loaner bikes will be available. Gift bags will be given to youngsters completing the activities, and visiting the booths and games. There will be free drawings for 23 bicycles in different sizes for those participat­ing. OUTDOORS: The state Department of Game and Fish, along with the city of Las Vegas, will hold a free youth day June 9 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Harris Kids Pond. MORE HOOPS: Potential college basketball players will have a chance locally to display their talents when Northern New Mexico College holds the first Eagle Showcase Camp June 21-24 in Española. All varsity games will be played at the NNMC Eagle Memorial Sportsplex and regional college coaches are expected to be in attendance.
