SPORTS SPEAK UP!
EVERY TIME I open the Journal to Sports Speak Up the constant haters of Lobo Football never cease to amaze me. This time a “Lobo Fan” comparing a State School with nearly 30,000 students to 4 private schools with enrollments roughly the size of a Large high school as an example to drop D-1 football. You can cut every sport at UNM except for men’s basketball and they still would be irrelevant at the national level. Stop complaining and go watch a couple football games. — JRM-Corrales
AFTER REVIEWING the Title IX Report the first thing I noticed was they didn’t recommend reducing any football scholarships. How can that be? Their cost per scholarship is the 2nd highest of men’s sports. You don’t have to be a math professor to see this. Why are we not going back down to where we were before they added scholarships to the NCAA maximum some years back? They could reduce their number by 25 and still have a team as required by the Mountain West Conference and we can still field a team with NM Football Players who aren’t Division I material, we have plenty of them. Did football help write this report? — Old UNM Alum
IF UNM President Garnett Stokes can magically find $53,000 to hire a consultant, to make decisions. Maybe, she can magically find some more money to actually save some UNM athletic teams. — North Valley Wally
UNM WILL not drop football. UNM must keep football and make it a winner. UNM loses conference affiliation if they drop football. That means basketball will suffer. And for those who think Gonzaga is a model; Gonzaga is a private Catholic school and is considering adding football! Get your facts straight. Perhaps if you were part of the solution, by showing up to the games and supporting your football team, I wouldn’t have to come here to tell you the TRUTH. The football team won a schoolrecord 16 games in ’15, ’16. Where were you? — Rudy Chavez
DLB: obviously you missed the point of my submittal; I apologize so this time I’ll talk slower so that you can catch up. All other sports leagues NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, MLS etc. - except the NFL have matured enough to understand how to honor and show respect for our country and our flag and our National Anthem. You want to see it done right, catch a Duke City Gladiators game. — RGT
LEBRON JAMES being called the GOAT, really? G. Scott you are confused, LeBron remade this current team during the middle of the season, because he was not satisfied. MJ played great defense, which most don’t remember. He integrated new players and kept the team at a championship level. Kerr replaced Paxon, Longley replaced Cartwright, Rodman replaced Grant and they fit because Jordan expected the best of each player, i.e. making them better. Not to mention he has 6 championships and played in a much more difficult Eastern Conference. Would LeBron have gone to all these finals in the Western Conference? No way! You’re wrong, GS. — Anthony
