SPORTS SPEAK UP!

- sportsspeakup@abqjournal.com

THE JOURNAL’S Geoff Grammer stated that he hasn’t been granted a one-on-one interview with MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson in the years he has been the Lobos’ basketball beat writer. I like the use of the word “granted.” If Grammer ever gets the interview, hopefully he will ask questions relating to UNM’s connection to the MWC. Maybe he could even seek readers’ suggestions as to what to ask Thompson. Actually, has anyone ever spotted Thompson in Albuquerque at a UNM athletic contest? Odds are better at finding him in Las Vegas or Boise.

IT LOOKS LIKE Coach Weir found a real gem in Sarah Works as basketball Director of Player Development. I hope she can be loaned to the UNM football team, they certainly could use her. — North Valley Wally

THE RECENT HIRING of Sarah Works by coach Paul Weir is an act of genius as he slowly, but carefully builds the foundation of a winning, whole-person basketball team here. Her credentials are outstanding. That she worked here for free last year and got to know the players as people, not just as student-athletes, shows her dedication to this up and coming program. The new players Paul has recruited are amazingly talented, the returning players also. Get your season tickets now, this is going to be a special year!

— Happy Season Ticket Holder in Nob Hill RECOMMENDED UNM Athletic Sports Cuts: I support our football program but believe awarding 85 grants in aid/athletic scholarships costing $1,724,282 is excessive and should be reduced no more than 60, preferably less. The number and salaries of the coaches and staff should be reduced. While playing on Rutgers championship teams in the mid to late ’50s, we had 46 varsity players including walk-ons, some on academic scholarships. We had a head coach and three assistant coaches. Football spending is way out of line and not a sacred cow that can’t be touched.”

I REMEMBER when gymnastics was considered being cut at UNM, Folks were in an uproar. Two days after gymnastics was cut, nobody cared. I assume the same will be true whichever sport is cut at, UNM.
