Man in custody after SWAT standoff

-

The Albuquerque police SWAT team took a man into custody after a standoff lasting several hours in a southwest neighborhood Monday morning.

Gabriel Matthew Rodriguez, 26, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police say he pointed a gun at his neighbors. He was arrested around 8 a.m.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, officers were called to the 8500 block of Mesa Roja SW, near Tower and Unser SW, around 1:50 a.m. because a woman reported her neighbor, later identified as Rodriguez, had come into her backyard and pointed a gun at her, asking if “she had called the cops on him the other night.” When officers arrived, they saw Rodriguez jump back into his own yard and run into his house, according to the complaint.

Officers surrounded the house, said police spokesman Tanner Tixier, but Rodriguez refused to come out or communicate. The SWAT team was called to the scene around 4:45 a.m.
