Let’s not repeat the shameful past

THE INHUMANE separating of children from their parents has been done by this country in the not-sodistant past. Ask Native American elders about their experience with the American government. How they were forcibly taken from their homes, not allowed to speak their own language and beaten if they did so, forcibly kept at “boarding schools.”

The White House, Republicans and their supporters in this need to read their history books about this shameful past and decide if we will repeat these shameful mistakes, or will we learn from them and become a better, more humane country that the rest of the world can respect?

We do not abuse children, that is not what this country, or its decent people, support. Border security can and has been achieved without destroying children’s lives. VICTORIA GORDON Albuquerque
