Father pleads not guilty in death
DURANGO, Colo. — An attorney for a Colorado father entered a not guilty plea Friday on his behalf in the death of his 13-yearold son in 2012.
A public defender for Mark Redwine, 55, entered the pleas to charges of seconddegree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of Dylan Redwine of Colorado Springs.
Elaine Hall, Dylan’s mother, was in court along with his older brother Cory.
Dylan reportedly did not want to see his father and disappeared while on a court-ordered visitation with his father in Vallecito, near Durango, the newspaper said.
Dylan texted his mother on Nov. 18, 2012, to say his father had picked him up at the airport and made plans to meet a friend early the next morning. He was never heard from again.
Dylan’s blood was found in several locations in his father’s living room, an indictment said, and a cadaver dog indicated a deceased person had been in the living room and the bed of Mark Redwine’s pickup truck. Redwine was arrested in Bellingham, Washington. His trial is set to begin on Nov. 26.
Mom charged in child’s death
LOS ANGELES — The mother of Anthony Avalos was arrested Friday and charged in the murder of the 10-year-old boy, who authorities believe was the victim of child abuse.
Heather Barron, 28, was arrested Friday morning and charged with murder, child abuse resulting in death, and torture, said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Barron’s boyfriend, Kareem Leiva, 32, was also arrested earlier this week. He was charged Friday with murder, torture and assault on a child causing death.
Barron faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years to life in prison, and Leiva faces 32 years to life.
Anthony was found with severe injuries at his family’s apartment in Lancaster on June 20 and died the following day. Investigators classified the death as suspicious, and county officials removed other children from the home as the investigation continued.
Barron and Leiva are accused of torturing the boy in the days leading up to his death, the district attorney’s office. Authories said Anthony showed signs of having been severely beaten, as well as malnourishment.
