Internal pressure

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Sydney Sierota has her hands in a couple of important projects. She’s starting a summer tour with Pentatonix and finishing an album.

“There’s a lot of pressure in choosing which songs make the album,” she says in a recent interview. “We’re really glad to have this problem. We’ve written some songs that mean a lot to us.”

Sierota is the vocalist for the indie pop band Echosmith. She is joined in the band by her brothers, Noah and Graham.

Though the band formed in 2009, it wasn’t until 2014 that the single “Cool Kids” became a mainstream hit.

This catapulted the siblings into stratosphere, and they handled it with grace.

In fact, while they were writing for the coming album, Sierota says, there was pressure on the band members — but it was internal.

“There are some days that we feel super-pressured to try and write a hit song,” she says. “It’s awesome to hear your song on the radio. We write music that we can stand with. It’s a constant battle. It’s hard to keep everything in mind when we’re writing. We simply have to let go and see what comes out of the sessions.”

Making this album was also different for the band, because older brother Jamie Sierota left the band to raise his family.

“Jamie was a huge part of the writing process,” she says. “We needed to find what the band sounded like without him. There were days we felt super-inspired, and you never know what you’re going to get. We also made a drive to be more personal in our lyrics. It’s helped shape the tone for the new album.”

Echosmith released the single “Over My Head” from the coming album, and it has already made an imprint on radio.

“We feel good in the place we are as a band,” she says. “Being on tour adds a little stress for us as we finish this album. It’s also a chance for us to perform some new songs for the crowds and get some input. We only have 30 minutes to perform our hearts out on stage.”
