Jeff Berg tackles historic NM movie theatres

New Mexico’s theatrical ties span more than 100 years. The Fountain Theatre, once a

Civil War hospital and headquarte­rs, produced plays, opera and vaudeville performanc­es until 1929, when the venue started airing talkies. Today, it holds the title of oldest operating theater in New Mexico. Albuquerqu­e drive-in attendees enjoyed personal screens for each car at the Circle Autoscope. The Rio Grande Theater operated for more than 70 years before showing its final screening, of “U.S. Marshals,” in 1998.

AT BOOKWORKS: Marc Friedlande­r will play classical guitar at 3 p.m. today.

Friedlande­r is a classical guitarist from New York City who began studying the guitar at age 12 and has performed nationally and internatio­nally in art gallery showings, private functions, senior centers and music schools.

Bookworks also hosts a weekly story time at 10:30 every Thursday. It is free and open to children and families.
