READERS WEIGH IN ON UNM CUTS

-

The University of New Mexico’s decision to drop four athletic programs continues to elicit strong opinions by observers of the school.

THE SINS OF the fathers are now being perpetrated on their children. These Governor Martinez appointed caretakers have taken horrible care of their wards, the student-athletes at UNM and now the cowards have devised an unconscionable scheme to cover up and hide their prior omissions to act. UNM athletics will now be the laughing stock of the nation and every coach here, for male and female teams, will suffer the consequences, forever. Shame and repent, you inept sinners. — A Disgusted and Sickened Alum and FORMER season ticket holder in all sports

AND SO THE name of Paul Krebs shall be stricken and removed from all things considered “Lobo” and banished to the forgotten. So it shall be done .... — Burt

EL DIABLO = Paul Kreb$$$ — Manny G. from the Hub City

TO ALL WHO are calling for a boycott of UNM athletics over the elimination of men’s soccer: That’s cutting off your nose to spite your face. First, the other Lobo athletes had nothing to do with the regents decision. Second, boycotting UNM sports will reduce revenues, thereby putting more teams in jeopardy. Think about it. — Joe, ABQ

RATHER THAN cutting male athletes and adding female athletes, why not just cut female enrollment? — RedDevil

RIVETING: 1.) UNM soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein executing the performance of a lifetime while mixing it up with the regents (on Thursday). 2.) Volleyball coach Jeff Nelson scolding the regents for not looking the student-athletes in the eye. 3.) A student-athlete wagging his index finger at the regents for emphasis. Not so riveting: 1.) A possible budget solution of limiting recruiting trips for football coaches and fewer meals for their players. 2.) Possibly another investigation by the attorney general’s office into the legality of the actual meeting. Only in New Mexico. — NM Old Timer

THE CURRENT SET of UNM regents have allowed the Athletic Dept. to be financially mismanaged for over 6 years and to fall out of compliance with Title IX. Their solution? Punish the students. In a short 4 months, a new administration will be in place which will no doubt restore common sense and accountability to the process, starting hopefully by installing a new set of regents. — Frank

UNM’S BOARD of Regents votes to kill sports that UNM is good at and don’t cost a lot of money to field a third-rate football team that blows money like a drunk sailor! The fact that education is No. 50 in our state makes this that much more irresponsible. — Larry the VOL
