- ROZANNA M. MARTINEZ

Fall is almost here, and The Downs Racetrack & Casino has some cool promotions this September.

It’s all in the cards this September at the Downs during its “$120,000 Cash in the Cards” promotion. Three winners will be chosen in each drawing. Winners will get a chance to win up to $500 by flipping cards. They must guess whether the next card is higher or lower than the displayed card. Drawings will be held at noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Guests can win their share of up to $3,000 in free play on Saturdays and Sundays during the “$30,000 Downs Derby Weekend.” Participate in the virtual “Downs Derby” at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m., and 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays just by playing your favorite game.

Triple Crown Players Club card members can amp up their points on Wednesdays. Players will earn five times the points, with a chance to earn up to 10 times the points. The Downs will give a bonus five times the points on Sept. 3 in celebration of Labor Day.

Players Club members with September birthdays will earn three times the points on their birthdays and two times the points every Tuesday in September.

The Crown Room inside The Downs continues its casual dining menu and daily special. Enjoy a “California Dreamin’” — choice of grilled beef or chicken topped with avocado, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato and onion on a French roll with fries and a beverage for only $6.99 with your Players Club card. On Thursdays, enjoy a New Mexico favorite. The Crown Room will serve huevos rancheros for $4.99 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Downs is gearing up for a huge show you do not want to miss. The New Mexico Music Fan Fair will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 29. About 20 bands will perform throughout the day, including Al Hurricane Jr., Gonzalo, El Gringo, Red Wine and Black Pearl. Tickets will go on sale in a couple of weeks and will be available at the door. Admission is $10 for ages 21 and older, $5 for ages 12 to 20, and free for ages 11 and younger. There will be a kickoff party from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sept. 28, inside the First Turn Lounge. There is no cover for the kickoff party.

On Saturday, Sept. 1, the First Turn Lounge will have a big ’90s House Party from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wear your best ’90s attire, and you could win a cash prize.
