STRANGE BREW
Tractor presents silent horror film, ‘Stranger Things’ arcade
Tractor Brewing Co. is wrapping up October with events ranging from silent and spooky to the bizarre and outrageous.
Tonight guests will be mesmerized with the showing of the 1920 silent film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” accompanied by a live score by electro-acoustic, experimental singer-songwriter Tom Foe. The movie is about hypnotist Dr. Caligari, who uses a sleepwalker, Cesare, to commit murders, according to imdb. com.
“(Foe) is a big fan of ‘Dr. Caligari,’ so he developed a score based on that,” said Jeremy Kinter, marketing and events director for Tractor Brewing. “And so he did that last year for the film and wanted to have it again. It was amazing last year. It’s the quietest I’ve ever seen our taprooms. We project it on the screen, and he sets up right next to the screen so he has this whole electronic setup and several instruments. It’s pretty cool.”
The curious events continue with the Stranger Things Arcade Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 27, inspired by the popular Netflix TV series.
“We’re doing this with Yelp and Tricklock Theater,” Kinter said. “What it is is an adult carnival that is ’80s-themed. It is based on (the Netflix TV series) ‘Stranger Things.’ This year, it’s bigger and badder. There’s games, art and tattoos by Archetype Tattoo to fortune tellers and face painters. … We have 23 arcade and pinball games that are all free-play.”
Tricklock Company will host a strange special edition Reptilian Lounge at 10 p.m. inside a circus tent in Tractor’s parking lot. There eventgoers will find bizarre live acts as well as performances by Target Girl and the Page Sisters, according to the brewery’s website. Dance to tubular ’80s music played by DJ Flo Fader, rock ’n’ roll by The Despots and ’80s covers by Prism B*tch.
Tractor will be serving cocktails, as well as its beers. There will be an extra bar outside to accommodate guests.
“We’re serving cocktails now,” Kinter said. “We’ve been serving them since August now. Right now, we are just doing our Troubled Minds vodka, but we are serving New Mexico-made gin, whiskey and rum from different local distilleries.”
Ticket proceeds from the Stranger Things Arcade Carnival benefit Beer for a Better Burque.
“We support four nonprofits throughout the year through the Beer for a Better Burque program,” Kinter said. “This is our big event and we want to give them all the money from it. (The nonprofits are) Cancer Services of New Mexico, Equality New Mexico, Explora, and the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network.”
