Barbara Young Simms

-

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Barbara Young Simms, who departed from this world on the 27th day of October, 2018 at the age of 98. Barbara was born June 22, 1920 and leaves behind her beloved husband of seventy-five years, Dr. Albert Gallatin Simms II. She is survived by four of her five children – Albert, Margaret, Frank and Mary – as well as 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Leslie Ann, and grandson, Jesse.

Barbara was an elegant lady of great inspiration, talent, wit and intellect. She loved books, puzzles, travel, art, parties and her family and friends. She taught her daughters and granddaughters to be everything a lady should be, and to be independent and fiercely strong. She was a tremendous advocate for educational development and was acutely aware of the importance of educational opportunities for all – but especially for girls. In 1966, Barbara founded Sandia School for Girls, now known as Sandia Preparatory School. Barbara was a member of the Junior League of Albuquerque, PEO, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and Tuesday Literary Club. She served on many boards, including the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, Sandia Prep and was an honorary Trustee of Albuquerque Academy.

Barbara led an extraordinary life. Her grandchildren adored her. She was like the Storyteller, with children in her lap and on her shoulders. They listened to her story and became part of it. With every story there was a lesson learned. She was our rock, our mentor, our bright shining light and our source of inspiration. Her generosity, love, and compassion will always be remembered and never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, should you wish, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Sandia Preparatory School.

A private family service will be held at a later time.
