State auditor must protect NM
There’s no room for opponent Johnson’s ethical violations, conflict of interest
Election Day is less than a week away, and it’s time for voters to take control back and elect a state auditor to scrub New Mexico government clean. Negative campaigning and attack ads are simply not my style of campaigning. My opponent has proven he has a different approach for his campaign. It’s time to set the record straight and inform New Mexicans of the reality of current unelected State Auditor Wayne Johnson. New Mexicans have suffered enough corruption throughout the years, and we can’t afford Wayne Johnson. Trust in government must be restored.
But here lies the irony. Republican Wayne Johnson has been under the microscope for questionable activity and suspected partisanship for using his office for political gain. As Gov. Susana Martinez’s appointee, Johnson simultaneously served as a Bernalillo County commissioner, double-dipping for months, while he provided input into county ... policy. This was an ethical conflict. It’s beyond belief Johnson saw no problem cashing both paychecks courtesy of New Mexico taxpayers. No wonder his dual office-holding led to ethical complaints.
We need to restore public trust, and a state auditor with ethics complaints isn’t the way to do that. It’s beyond comprehension to support someone who, as state auditor, failed to acknowledge a conflict of interest in asking his fellow county commissioners to vote on his agenda while also overseeing them as auditor. We cannot have someone serving in this role who will continue the same devastating policies of the last failed eight years of the Martinez administration. We cannot have someone serving as chief financial watchdog who hired convicted felon and former Secretary of State Dianna Duran’s chief of staff to run their office. We cannot have someone serving as state auditor who (uses) the office ... to campaign for his own political career. We can’t have an auditor who was sanctioned by the Bernalillo County Ethics Board for (violating the code of conduct during his unsuccessful mayoral run) and refuses to pay the fines for his violations . ...
I wish I was imagining all of this for a movie script because I love the film industry in New Mexico. Sadly, this is reality with current unelected State Auditor Wayne Johnson.
The state auditor is a sacred, high office that serves as a beacon of integrity for New Mexico, and there must be no room for partisanship or any suggestion of it.
We must have integrity. We must have transparency and a leader to protect the interests of all.
New Mexicans are fed up and deserve better. We need faith restored in government.
I am committed to a different way. That way is to transparently protect all New Mexicans and to follow the law — always. I humbly ask for your vote.
