A man was shot and killed during a “confrontation” with officers Sunday afternoon at a Southeast Albuquerque apartment complex, according to a police department spokesman.

Officer Simon Drobik said Albuquerque police were dispatched to the complex on Louisiana SE near Gibson around 2:20 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports that shots had been fired.

“At some point when the officers responded to this individual who was firing shots, there was a confrontation between officers and this individual,” he said. “We know that at least one officer fired from the Albuquerque Police Department and the subject is deceased on scene.”

No one else was injured, and that officer has been placed on administrative

leave as detectives from multiple agencies investigate the shooting. Drobik said investigators would likely remain at the scene throughout the night.

“We don’t believe there are any outstanding subjects,” Drobik told reporters at a news conference Sunday evening. “We believe the public is safe tonight.”

This is the department’s sixth officer-involved shooting this year; it is its fourth fatal officerinvolved shooting.

Last month, police shot a man following a string of crimes that ended with a “dynamic hostage situation” at a Chinese buffet near San Mateo and Montgomery. The name of that suspect has not yet been released.
