■ What you need to know about Texas State: The Bobcats have some holes to fill after last season’s WNIT run, including at point guard where they lost assist leader and second-leading scorer Taeler Deer. But Texas State does have some good pieces to build around, including Leavitt, who led the team in scoring last season and was named to the All-Sun Belt preseason team. Johns was a solid scorer in junior college, and Brooke Holle was a third-team Sun Belt preseason pick. The Bobcats don’t have a lot of height and were outrebounded by 2.6 boards per game last season, but they limited opponents to 58.2 points per game and 25.3 percent shooting from 3-point range. Brooke and Bailey Holle are twins whose father, Eric, played football for the Kansas City Chiefs.

■ What you need to know about New Mexico: The Lobos, like Texas State, are in the process of replacing five starters, including do-it-all point guard Cherise Beynon. But the additions of transfers Robertson and McClure will prevent UNM from having to lean too heavily on underclassmen. Nunn, who averaged a double-double last season, remains the go-to interior scorer. She may get a few more looks from the perimeter with the additions of McClure and McGruder inside. Robertson has emerged as the team’s top ball-handler and adds a dimension with her quickness and ability to drive to the basket. UNM figures to be improved defensively but will need scoring production from its sophomores and freshmen to open things up for Nunn.
