Mescalero Apache elects tribal coun­cil mem­bers

Four mem­bers of the Mescalero Apache Tribe were elected to the tribal coun­cil Nov. 6, and will take their oaths of of­fice in Jan­uary.

Com­ing out on top was Ed­die Martinez with 709 votes, fol­lowed by Ber­na­lyn “Gina” Via with 670, Dawn Hose­tosavit with 574 and Larry Brusue­las Jr. with 538, ac­cord­ing to the of­fi­cial tally of the tribal elec­tion board.

Tribal mem­bers cast 1,134 valid bal­lots. Of that num­ber, 945 were cast in per­son.

Not mak­ing the cut were Car­loine Valdez with 434 votes, “Gar­alie” Mi­ra­lene Blay­lock with 417, Pamela Mor­gan with 378 and Danny Bre­uninger with 314.

The Mescalero Tribe con­sists of more than 4,000 mem­bers and the reser­va­tion lies within Otero County, but ad­joins the vil­lage of Rui­doso in Lin­coln County.
