Mescalero Apache elects tribal council members

Four members of the Mescalero Apache Tribe were elected to the tribal council Nov. 6, and will take their oaths of office in January.

Coming out on top was Eddie Martinez with 709 votes, followed by Bernalyn “Gina” Via with 670, Dawn Hosetosavi­t with 574 and Larry Brusuelas Jr. with 538, according to the official tally of the tribal election board.

Tribal members cast 1,134 valid ballots. Of that number, 945 were cast in person.

Not making the cut were Carloine Valdez with 434 votes, “Garalie” Miralene Blaylock with 417, Pamela Morgan with 378 and Danny Breuninger with 314.

The Mescalero Tribe consists of more than 4,000 members and the reservatio­n lies within Otero County, but adjoins the village of Ruidoso in Lincoln County.
