George L. Ramczyk
George Ramczyk, a long-time employee of the Albuquerque Publishing Company, died on November 8, 2018, at the age of 95.
George was born in Winona, MN, and grew up in Winona and Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Gertrude Ramczyk, his brothers Leonard, David and Richard, and his beloved wife Dorothy. George and Dorothy were happily married for 56 years before she died in 2002.
George enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, where he served as a gunner on the U.S.S. Chester in the Pacific theater in World War II. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Navy, even the eight hours he spent in the Pacific Ocean waiting to be picked up after the scout plane he was in failed to make it back to the ship. One of his lasting memories was of returning to the States under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
After his discharge from the Navy, George attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. He married Dorothy Kohner in 1946, and following his graduation, he and Dorothy sought warmer climes and came to New Mexico. George’s first job was with the Belen News Bulletin. Shortly thereafter, he went to work for the Albuquerque Publishing Company, where he worked for 33 years, until his retirement in 1985. George was the national advertising manager for the Publishing Company, a good fit for someone described in his high school year book as: "A salesman he will be, who speaks so fluently."
After his retirement, George and Dorothy enjoyed golfing, fishing, and going to the racetrack, where Dorothy became proficient in reading racing forms. George and Dorothy had eight children: Mary Higgins (Bernie), Stephen Ramczyk (Patricia), Margaret Stoliker (David), Michael Ramczyk,
Joan Lane (Kenny), Daniel Ramczyk, Barbara Ramczyk, and Rebecca Walsh (William). George is survived by all his children, by eight grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by the effervescent companion of his later years, Gloria McClosky, and her son Sean McClosky.
George will be remembered fondly by his family as among the last of the World War II vets who returned home from the war, got married, received a college degree on the GI Bill, and went to work. He ultimately supported a family of 10, always believing that the price of any item or service was negotiable. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. George was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, regularly attending Mass until his health began to decline in 2012. He resided at the Beehive at 6401 Corona, NE, for the last three years. The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful care he received at the Beehive.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Good Shepherd Center, 208 Iron Ave., Albuquerque, NM, 87102. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave., NE, at 11:30 on Friday, November 16, 2018, followed by a blessing of the crypt and interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming, NE. A reception will be held at El Pinto Restaurant on North 4th Street beginning at 1:30p.m.
