Villanova has no trouble with Quinnipiac

PHILADELPH­IA — Phil Booth scored a career-high 23 points, and No. 9 Villanova routed Quinnipiac 86-53 on Saturday night.

Booth made three of Villanova’s 12 3-pointers. The Wildcats (2-0) shot 47.1 percent (32 for 68) from the floor.

Villanova led by as many as 37. The Wildcats (2-0) outrebound­ed the Bobcats 50-29, including 20 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second-chance points.

Collin Gillespie went 4 for 6 from 3-point range and finished with 16 points at the Wells Fargo Center. Senior forward Eric Paschall had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, added eight rebounds and three assists.

Quinnipiac (0-1), coached by former Villanova assistant Baker Dunleavy, made just 34 percent of its shots. Cameron Young scored 18 points for the Bobcats.

No. 3 GONZAGA 104, TEXAS SOUTHERN 67: In Spokane, Wash., Brandon Clarke had 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Bulldogs (2-0) routed Texas Southern (1-1).

Trayvon Reed had 14 points and 11 boards for TSU, which was coming off an upset win over Baylor.

No. 16 SYRACUSE 84, MOREHEAD STATE 70: In Syracuse, N.Y., Tyus Battle scored 23 points and Elijah Hughes had 21, leading Syracuse to the victory.

Oshae Brissett added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Syracuse (2-0). Jordan Walker led Morehead State (1-2) with 24 points.

No. 19 MICHIGAN 56, HOLY CROSS 37: In Ann Arbor, Mich., Charles Matthews scored 20 points and Ignas Brazdeikis added 19, helping Michigan (2-0) to the win.

Reserve forward Connor Niego scored 13 points for Holy Cross (1-1), which led by six points at halftime.

No 24 PURDUE 84, BALL STATE 75: In West Lafayette, Ind., Carsen Edwards scored 23 points on 8-for22 shooting, and Purdue (2-0) pulled away for the victory.

Tayler Persons led Ball State (1-1) with 19 points and eight rebounds.

OREGON STATE 83, WYOMING 64: In Corvallis, Ore., Tres Tinkle had 28 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as Oregon State (2-0) defeated Wyoming (0-2).

Justin James had 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Cowboys.

COLORADO STATE 92, ARKANSAS PINE BLUFF 67: In Fort Collins, Colo., Nico Carvacho scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and the Rams (2-0) topped the Golden Lions (0-2). Six Rams, including all five starters, scored in double figures.

SOUTHERN UTAH 66, SAN JOSE STATE 59: Cameron Oluyitan scored 15 points, Dwayne Morgan added 13 and Southern Utah (2-0) rallied with 12 straight points to beat the Spartans (1-1). Craig LeCesne had 15 points for San Jose State.

IDAHO STATE 72, BOISE STATE 70: In Boise, Idaho, Chidi Udengwu hit two free throws as time expired as Idaho State (1-1) battled back from 18 points down in the second half to spoil Boise State’s season opener. R.J. Williams had 15 points to lead Boise State.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 61, UNLV 50: In Las Vegas, Nev., James Batemon scored 27 points and the Lions (2-0) pulled away in the second half to spoil the Rebels’ season opener. Shakur Juiston led UNLV with 12 points.

HIGHLANDS 87, ENMU 76: At Dreamstyle Arena, Jordan Jones scored 24 points and Gerad Davis added 18 to help the Cowboys (1-1) rally past the Greyhounds (0-2). Isaiah Murphy scored 17 points to lead Eastern.

WNMU 74, FORT LEWIS 70: At Dreamstyle Arena, Jon-Reese Woodson scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures as the Mustangs (2-0) edged the Skyhawks (1-1). Riley Farris led Fort Lewis with 18 points.

Women

No. 3 OREGON 75, No. 18 SYRACUSE 73: In Eugene, Ore., Sabrina Ionescu had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Erin Boley made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 51 seconds left, helping No. 3 Oregon (2-0) hold off No. 18 Syracuse (1-1).

WNMU 50, HIGHLANDS 34: In Portales, Tatyanna McFarland had 17 points and 16 rebounds and the Mustangs (2-0) used a big second half to defeat the Cowgirls (0-2). Amari Terry led NMHU with 12 points.

ENMU 58, FORT LEWIS 55: In Portales, Treyanna Clay scored 12 points, including the final four of the game, and the Greyhounds (2-0) edged the Skyhawks (0-2). Alyssa Yocky had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Fort Lewis.
