Man wounded in shootout with APD

At least one officer opened fire after suspect threatened and shot at police, spokesman says

A man was wounded early Sunday morning as he exchanged gunfire with police responding to a domestic violence call at a Northwest Albuquerque home, according to a department spokesman.

This is the Albuquerque Police Department’s seventh officer-involved shooting this year and its second this month.

Officer Simon Drobik said police were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. Sunday to 3912 67th NW, near Coors and Ladera, in response to a domestic violence call involv-

ing an armed man.

When police attempted to speak to the man, he “made threatening statements and fired multiple shots at officers on scene.” At least one officer opened fire.

The man, whose name has not been released, was treated by officers on scene before being transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

By Sunday morning, the street in front of the home was littered with yellow evidence markers, a black truck parked in the driveway was riddled with bullet holes and a police SUV with a broken out back window sat yards away. Large swaths of 67th and St. Josephs NW were blocked by police tape for hours.

Neighbors milling around Sunday afternoon said the area is normally quiet. Some said they have lived in their homes for several years and that the police activity caught them by surprise.

Teresa Martin, who lives nearby, said she woke in the middle of the night to a volley of gunfire, but stayed in bed.

“If I’d have gotten up, I would have panicked,” she said.

Before police arrived at her door in the morning, she thought maybe the shooting had been a dream.

“I’ve been here 24 years,” she said. “We’ve never had any trouble like that.”

Just two weeks ago, a man was killed after a confrontation with police at a Southeast Albuquerque apartment complex. Family identified him as 18-year-old Anthony David Chavez, but APD has not released additional details about that officer-involved shooting nor the one on Oct. 7 in which a man was shot after a hostage situation at Chinese food buffet.
