GONZAGA KNOCKS OFF NO. 1 DUKE

No. 3 Gonzana blows 16-point lead but recovers for victory

Blue Devils rally from 16 down to tie it, only to fall short to the team likely to rise to No. 1.

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Duke’s Maui mastery is over. Gonzaga blocked the Blue Devils out of another title.

Rui Hachimura scored 20 points and No. 3 Gonzaga blocked four shots in the final 46 seconds to hold off fivetime champion Duke 89-87 on Wednesday in the Maui Invitation­al title game.

Duke (5-1) trailed by 16 in the second half before mounting a massive charge with a series of dunks and drives to the basket. After the Blue Devils tied it at 87-all, Hachimura scored on a hard drive to put Gonzaga up.

The Zags (6-0) missed four free throws to give Duke a final shot, but Brandon Clarke blocked R.J. Barrett’s drive on the game’s final play.

Gonzaga beat a No. 1 team for the first time and ended Duke’s unbeaten streak on the Valley Isle (17-1) with its second Maui Invitation­al title.

Barrett had 23 points for Duke.

No. 2 KANSAS 77, MARQUETTE 68: In New York, Dedric Lawson had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kansas in an NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal.

Marquette (3-1) led by as many as 12 in the first half before taking a 47-38 lead into the break. Then came the Jayhawks’ 22-0 run.

Marquette went 0-of-10 from the field to start second half as Kansas (4-0) retook the lead in commanding fashion. The Jayhawks will face No. 5 Tennessee next.

No. 5 TENNESSEE 92, LOUISVILLE 81: In New York, Grant Williams scored 24 points and Tennessee had five players in double figures in beating Louisville in the other semifinal in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Admiral Schofield added 20 points for the Vols (4-0), who shot 54 percent from the field. The win was the 664th of Tennessee coach Rick Barnes’ career. It moved him past John Wooden on the all-time Division I wins list. Jordan Nwora had 23 points for Louisville (3-1).

No. 10 KENTUCKY 87, WINTHROP 74: In Lexington, Ky., PJ Washington had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Herro added 15 points as Kentucky ran away from Winthrop.

Coming off Sunday’s tense win over hot-shooting VMI, the Wildcats (4-1) had a far easier time against the Eagles as they used their size to control the boards 37-20 and scoring in the paint (42-24). Kentucky led by as many as 26 points in the second half and was never threatened. No. 25 WISCONSIN 62, STANFORD 46: In Paradise Island, Bahamas, Ethan Happ had 16 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out late as Wisconsin beat Stanford in the first round in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Sophomore Nate Reuvers had a tournament-record nine blocked shots for the Badgers (4-0).

D’Mitrik Trice added 16 points for Wisconsin, which shot just 35 percent after halftime yet came up with a 9-0 burst to seize control after the Cardinal had gotten closed to a basket with 6:53 left.

WYOMING 68, RICHMOND 66: In Fort Myers, Fla., Justin James scored a season-best 29 points, including the game-winning shot, and Austin Mueller blocked

Nick Sherod’s final try in the waning seconds as Wyoming rallied past Richmond for third place at the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

James scored 19 of his 29 points after halftime — including a 3 to tie at 66 and a jumper to win it — as Wyoming heated up with 47 percent shooting in the second half. Hunter Maldonado added 15 points, nine in the second half, with eight rebounds, and Jake Hendricks scored 10 for the Cowboys (2-4).

Grant Golden led Richmond (2-3) with a career-high 33 points.

IOWA STATE 87, SAN DIEGO STATE 57: Also in Lahaina, Hawaii, Marial Shayok scored 21 points and Michael Jacobson added 19 as Iowa State blew out San Diego State to win the Maui Invitation­al fifth-place game.

The Cyclones (5-1) lost to Arizona and beat Illinois to open the Maui Invitation­al, then jumped on the Aztecs early. Iowa State built a 14-point halftime lead and kept pushing to close out the tournament on a positive note.

San Diego State (3-2) was blown out by top-ranked Duke in its opener and bounced back with a win over Xavier in the second round. ILLINOIS STATE 73, BOISE STATE 70: In the Cayman Islands, Milik Yarbrough had 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Illinois State over Boise State for fifth place in the Cayman Islands Classic.

Yarbrough gave ISU a 69-60 lead with 3:59 remaining, but the Redbirds didn’t make another field goal the rest of the game. He made just enough free throws (4-for-7) down the stretch to hold off the Broncos, the last coming with 4.1 seconds left for a three-point lead.

Josh Jefferson added 12 points for Illinois State (4-2). Pat Dembley led Boise State (2-3) with 17. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 78, COLORADO STATE 65: In Estero, Fla., David Jenkins scored a career-high 32 points and South Dakota State’s all-time scoring leader Mike Daum added 11 points as the Jackrabbit­s beat Colorado State for fifth place at the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Jenkins was 13-for-23 from the floor with seven rebounds and three assists. Daum was 4-for-8 in just 26 minutes, and his 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining put him into doublefigu­res for the 103rd career time. Daum, who became the program’s scoring leader last game, moved into a tie for 93rd on the NCAA career scoring list with 2,399 points.

State

NEW MEXICO STATE 92, EASTERN NM 65: In Las Cruces, the host Aggies raced to a 51-29 halftime lead in taking a win over the Greyhounds at the Pan Am Center.

NMSU’s Terrell Brown had a team-high 14 points and Clayton Henry grabbed a team-best nine rebounds as the Aggies improved to 4-1.

The Greyhounds (1-3) listed this as an exhibition game that won’t be on their win-loss record. Junior guard Isaiah Murphy led Eastern with 13 points.

New Mexico State returns to action next Wednesday night at UTEP. ENMU next will travel to Topeka, Kan., to face Washburn on Saturday.

Women

No. 6 MISS. STATE 106, FURMAN 41: In Starkville, Miss., Teaira McCowan got her 43rd career doubledoub­le with 24 points and 10 rebounds as MSU rolled past Furman.

The Bulldogs (5-0) used a 30-0 run over 12 minutes of the first and second quarters to run away from the Paladins. Mississipp­i State led 60-18 at halftime.
