Alfred A. Valdez,

90, a native of Raton, NM, moved to Albuquerqu­e in 1937. He graduated from AHS in 1946 and received his bachelor’s degree from UNM in 1961. He served three years in the

US Army Air Corps. He was a Senior Vice President of Albuquerqu­e Federal where he was employed for 29 years. Al retired from Albuquerqu­e Federal and became self employed as a management consultant for 12 years, focusing on small business and financial institutes. He was Preceded in death by his wife, Toni of 42 years; his parents, Joe and Lucia Valdez; two brothers, Bob and Orlando. He is survived by his son, Mark (Wendy); daughter, Lisa (Lorenzo); grandchild­ren, Austin, Janae, and Bria plus his great- granddaugh­ter. Al was deeply involved in community activities including Volunteer Leadership in the following organizati­onsresiden­tGreater Albuquerqu­e Chamber of Commerce, President- UNM Alumni Associatio­n, President- UNM Lobo Club, Chairman- Better Business Bureau of NM, President- Great SW Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, Chairman- Albuquerqu­e Service Clubs Presidents Council, Regional (of 5 states) Vice PresidentO­ptimist Internatio­nal, and Governor- NMWest Texas District for Optimist Internatio­nal. Al was an Optimist for over 40 years Al received several honors and awards for his dedication to community service: He was selected Albuquerqu­e’s Outstandin­g Young Man (1962), National Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, and Albuquerqu­e Senior Foundation. Al was deeply involved in Republican politics for over 50 years especially in fundraisin­g. He served as: State Finance Chairman of NM Republican Party, State Treasurer of the Nevada Republican Party (served two terms), and President of the Nevada Republican Men’s Club. Al and his wife, Toni attended five National Republican Convention­s. Special Thanks to his angelic caregivers: Carmen, Luisa, Erica, and Tiffany. Mass will be celebrated at FRENCH University at 9:00 a.m. Private interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributi­ons can be made to the Barrett House.
