Penn fends off 17th-ranked Villanova

PHILADELPH­IA — AJ Brodeur scored 16 points as Penn beat No. 17 Villanova 78-75 on Tuesday night, the Quakers’ first win over the Wildcats since 2002.

Penn fans stormed the court after Villanova’s Phil Booth missed the tying 3-point attempt and set off a regular-season celebratio­n not seen in Philly in years. And with good reason — the national champion Wildcats had won a city-record 25 straight games against Big 5 rivals Temple, Saint Joseph’s, La Salle and the Quakers.

Penn’s student section started rocking the bleachers with minutes left, and the Quakers avoided a late scare and delivered the latest memorable moment at the Palestra. DENVER 90, WYOMING 87 (OT): In Laramie, Wyo., Joe Rosga scored 22 points and made four consecutiv­e free throws in the final 9 seconds of overtime to help Denver defeat Wyoming.

After Wyoming’s Justin James made two free throws to tie it at 84 in the final minute of overtime, Donoven Carlisle put the Pioneers back ahead with a put-back with 21 seconds remaining. Rosga twice made a pair of free throws after missed 3-pointers by Wyoming, giving Denver a 90-84 lead. Wyoming’s Jake Hendricks then made a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Tory Stewart-Miller added 10 points for Denver (4-7) Hendricks scored 27 points for Wyoming (3-7).

Women

NEW MEXICO STATE 66, DENVER 64: In Las Cruces, the Aggies (5-2) rallied in the final four minutes to beat Denver (7-3) at the Pan American Center.

Denver held a 10-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter before New Mexico State began its comeback,

Four straight points from Dominique Mills cut the Aggies’ deficit to 56-54 with 4:51 to play. After Denver took a 60-57 lead, Prince made a free throw followed by a basket from Pack and two more free throws from Dominique Mills to give the Aggies a 61-60 lead with 1:50 to go.

The two sides traded baskets until Pack hit two free throws with 30 seconds left to give New Mexico State a 65-64 lead. After two strong defensive possession­s and a turnover, Dominique Mills went to the line to the line with 3.2 seconds on the clock and made one of two.

A half-court heave by the Pioneers at the buzzer bounced out.

Brooke Salas led NM State with 15 points.
