Farmington student makes it to the finale of ‘The Voice’
Chevel Shepherd advances with rendition of LeAnn Rimes’ song “Blue”
Chevel Shepherd sang her heart out during Monday’s broadcast of “The Voice.”
The performance and the votes would determine who would make the final 4 of the singing competition.
On Tuesday night, the 16-yearold Farmington High School student made the cut.
She will compete next Monday in the finale.
During Monday night’s broadcast, Shepherd stayed in the country genre and performed LeAnn Rimes’ “Blue.” After the show, Shepherd’s version of the song clocked in at No. 6 on the iTunes charts.
Shepherd’s coach Kelly Clarkson chose the song because it’s one of her favorites.
“I really want to show Chevel’s purity in her voice,” Clarkson said in the broadcast. “The authentic country sound.”
Shepherd worked with Clarkson in fine tuning the song and the Grammy winner encouraged Shepherd to be a bit more diva.
“The cute thing about Chevel is that she has zero amount of diva in
her,” Clarkson said. “In the beginning of this song, I want her to slow it down and show how beautiful her voice is.”
During her time on the show, Shepherd has balanced work and school and said she’s given thought to what an album would sound like.
“I definitely want to make an old-school country record,” Shepherd said. “I’m also trying to write more of my original music.”
Shepherd was also reeling from last week’s performance of Loretta Lynn’s “You’re Lookin’ at Country.”
“Loretta Lynn reached out to me. She followed me (on Twitter) and made a Facebook post telling me she loved it,” Shepherd gushed. “I was literally in tears.”
Clarkson had three contestants in the final eight.
After Shepherd’s performance on Monday, she asked for votes for Shepherd.
“This is pure country,” Clarkson said of Shepherd. “They don’t make it like this anymore. I want you to win this show.”
