A fleeing armed robbery suspect who had just shot and killed a homeowner’s dog died on Wednesday afternoon after an officer opened fire on him in a northeast Albuquerque backyard, an APD spokesman said.

Officer Daren DeAguero, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said the officer shot at the suspect after a “confrontation” with the man. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. No officers were injured in the incident.

He did not say if the suspect shot at police first or how many rounds the officer fired.

The officer who fired on the suspect has been placed on standard paid

administrative leave.

The incident began when a woman reported being robbed at gunpoint near Comanche and San Mateo NE around 4:30 p.m., DeAguero said.

He said when police arrived the suspect fled into a nearby neighborhood and began running through backyards.

“As he’s jumping fences he does fire upon one of the dogs in the backyard,” DeAguero said. “That dog is deceased.”

He said officers found the suspect in a backyard, near Kiowa and Colorado northeast, after hearing the gunshot.

“There was a confrontation and shots were fired,” DeAguero said.

He said the suspect died at the scene, and there was a weapon found nearby.

DeAguero said the shooting is under investigation. He did not identify the suspect, give his age or identify the officer who shot him.

Police vehicles and crime scene tape blocked off several streets as a perimeter around the scene Wednesday night. Farther down the block, several investigators could be seen around the mobile crime scene lab while one officer spoke to several people nearby.

This is the fourth APD officerinvolved shooting since October and the second fatal police shooting.

Police have still not identified or released any information on the suspects or officers involved in the previous three shootings dating back to Oct. 7.
