Detectives have arrested a 25-year-old man who they say stabbed his father to death at their central Albuquerque home Tuesday evening.

Dominic Lucero-Sanchez is being held at the county jail and is charged with murder. He is also referred to as Dominic Sanchez in jail and court records.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, officers were called to the 100 block of Hilton NW, near Second and Montaño, shortly after 5 p.m. for reports that a man was lying in a front yard bleeding.

When officers arrived, they found 60-year-old Luis Sanchez had been stabbed in the neck. He was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died.

A neighbor told detectives he had heard a man yelling for help and went outside to see what was going on. He said he saw Sanchez lying on his back with his son, Lucero-Sanchez, kneeling over him. Both were covered in blood and a knife was

sticking out of Sanchez’s neck, according to the complaint.

After another neighbor called police, Lucero-Sanchez took off, according to the complaint. He was arrested a couple of blocks away with blood on his hands and clothes, according to the complaint. He did not want to be interviewed without a lawyer.

Lucero-Sanchez’s hearing in Metropolitan Court was reset for medical reasons Wednesday afternoon — his jail booking photo shows a gash on his head and when he was arrested he told police he had “pain in his buttocks and stomach” — but his public defender questioned whether the complaint proves detectives had probable cause to arrest him.

“I do think the facts are a little light in support of the allegation here,” the public defender said. “There’s really no evidence of the act that is alleged here.”

Judge Rosemary Cosgrove Aguilar disagreed and said the witnesses’ account and the blood on Lucero-Sanchez’s hands were probable cause.

Late Wednesday morning, Luis Sanchez’s nephew Ricky Sanchez was at the house hosing off the driveway.

He teared up talking about his uncle who he said had raised Lucero-Sanchez and Lucero Sanchez’s older brother as a single father. He said the family had lived in the house for several years.

“He did everything he could for them,” Ricky Sanchez said. “He did the best that he could with what he had.”

In June 2017, at the same house, a woman was visiting her friend when she was shot and killed following a fight with two other men. Her friend was shot and critically injured. The two men, Morgan Quarles and Gabriel Mariscal, were arrested and their trials are pending.

It’s unclear if Lucero-Sanchez and his father were connected to that incident.
