SPORTS SPEAK UP!

BILL WALTON deserves an award from the city of Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico. His commentary on ESPN during to Lobo/Colorado game was simply spectacular. His knowledge of Albuquerque and the Land of Enchantment was incredible. He was well versed on the history of Lobo basketball to include former players and coaches from years past.He gave nothing but praise for the history of the Pit and those who made it what it is today . ... Thanks Bill, you put us on the map like no one else especially on a national sports telecast. — DS, Los Lunas

YOUR PIECE ON WALTON is a true classic . ... I was in Portland when the Trail Blazers won the NBA title with Walton in the early ‘70s. At the time, he was a vegetarian, skinny as a rail, wore a pony tail, indeed spoke English as a fifth language, lived in a funky A frame house on the Willamette River, loved Grateful Dead music, disdained cars, rode his bike to practices and wore tie-dye to the celebration bash at the Rose Garden after they won . ... As you said, What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been. — Walter Hines

BILL WALTON is still New Mexico True. Can’t allow that many layups to an opponent and expect to win. Mix in some zone to confuse the other team. 50% at the free throw line doesn’t get it. A 17-point lead and then get run out of your own arena in a 3-point loss. Hopefully Carlton Bragg will pay dividends for the Lobos and give the team some much needed inside presence. Not even midDecember and UNM has to win the MWC Tournament to get an NCAA bid. Still a mile high and disappointing as … — Lobo BB Analyst

THE LOBOS LOOKED really good in the first 11 minutes of the game but after that it turned bad. … Looks like Noodles is back! — JG

Dear RB: You should get down on your hands and knees to be thankful Albuquerque has minor league baseball like the Isotopes. They play in a great facility with an excellent atmosphere. Have you checked the ticket prices lately to see an MLB game? Additionally, the purpose of minor league baseball is the development of players, not winning games. So if you think you’re going to see a strategically played game, you’ll need to drive to Denver or Phoenix. Otherwise, go on “dollar hot dog night,” relax, sit back and support the team.

CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO’S own Danni Williams is now a Texas Lady Longhorn. She still has a sweet three-point shot that I saw when she was in high school. She got an unsportsmanlike foul call for putting her right elbow into the face of the Tennessee defender while she was shooting. Most people would say, “I put my right elbow up when I shoot”. But they’re right-handed; Danni is left-handed. — Larry the VOL

Williams had 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds Sunday in Texas’ 88-82 loss to Tennessee. — Randy, Journal
