Architects honor projects, Predock
The American Institute of Architects’ Albuquerque chapter last month recognized six projects in its annual awards program, along with honoring renowned architect Antoine Predock with a special lifetime achievement award.
The Albuquerque High School renovation and expansion won the organization’s Honor Award, its highest. The architect on the project was Jon Anderson Architecture, the contractor was Bradbury Stamm Construction and the owner is Albuquerque Public Schools.
The jury’s notes say the project “transforms completely the school’s public spaces. This project sets a model of how to elevate mundane existing buildings to become architecture for the benefit of the education of next generations,” the notes say.
The Smith Plaza renovation at the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Mutual Corporate Headquarters each won Merit Awards. The lead on the Smith Plaza project was MRWM Landscape Architects, the contractor was Jaynes Corp. and UNM is the owner. RMKM Architecture was the architect on the New Mexico Mutual project, the general contractor was Bradbury Stamm, and New Mexico Mutual is the owner.
Three projects earned the Citation Award: George I. Sanchez Collaborative Community School, Jon Anderson Architecture, Bradbury Stamm as contractor and APS as owner; 505 Central, Baker A+D architects, Insight Construction as contractor and Mark Baker as owner; and Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex, G. Donald Dudley Architect Ltd., Bradbury Stamm as contractor, city of Albuquerque as owner.
The AIA had a special medal designed for Predock’s lifetime achievement award that borrowed from the architect’s design for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which opened in 2014.
Predock was chosen for the $350 million project after a competition featuring architects from 64 countries.
