Aggies beat Bakersfiel­d on road at final horn

BAKERSFIEL­D, Calif. — With New Mexico State inbounding and the game tied at 59 with 2 seconds remaining, Adenike Aderinto banked in a layup at the horn to give the Aggies a 61-59 win over Western Athletic Conference foe CSU Bakersfiel­d on Saturday afternoon.

The victory gives NMSU a 10-6 overall record and 2-1 in WAC play. Bakersfiel­d is 6-11, 2-2.

The Aggies had built a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but with 18 seconds left, the Roadrunner­s’ Vanessa Austin tied the game at 57 with a layup, which set the stage for Aderinto’s winning score.

Brooke Salas had a team-high 16 points for New Mexico State.

The Aggies return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Seattle.

No. 4 BAYLOR 79, TCU 55: In Fort Worth, Juicy Landrum scored a careerhigh 23 points, and Kalani Brown had 16 points and four blocks as Baylor went on a huge first-half run before coasting to a win over TCU.

The Lady Bears (13-1, 3-0 Big 12) had a 20-0 spurt that started late in the first quarter and covered most of the second, when they outscored the Horned Frogs 19-2 for a 35-11 halftime lead. TCU is 11-4, 1-3.

No. 9 MARYLAND 83, MICHIGAN 69: In College Park, Md., Taylor Mikesell scored 17 points, Shakira Austin had 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Maryland used a strong finish to get past Michigan.

The victory thrust the Terrapins into sole possession of second place in the Big Ten. Maryland (15-1, 4-1) has won three straight since losing to the Scarlet Knights on Dec. 31. Michigan is 11-6, 2-3.

No. 11 TEXAS 64, No. 20 IOWA STATE 62: In Ames, Iowa, Sug Sutton had 24 points and Joyner Holmes had a big block as Texas edged Iowa State.

The Longhorns (14-2, 4-0 Big 12) have won seven straight. Clovis High graduate Danni Williams had 10 points for Texas. The Cyclones dropped to 13-3, 3-1.

No. 14 GONZAGA 97, PORTLAND 72: In Spokane, Wash., Zykera Rice scored a career-high 28 points as Gonzaga beat Portland.

Laura Stockton added 19 points for the Bulldogs (16-1, 5-0 West Coast Conference), who have won 20 straight over the Pilots (8-8, 0-5).

EASTERN NEW MEXICO 76, TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 53: In Kingsville, Texas, Treyanna Clay had 18 points for the Greyhounds (10-4, 5-1 Lone Star) in a victory over the Javelinas (5-8, 2-4).

MIDWESTERN STATE (TX.) 80, WESTERN NEW MEXICO 46: In Wichita Falls, Texas, the Mustangs (6-7, 2-4 Lone Star) were led by Clara Fields, who had a teamhigh 16 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Midwestern State (5-8, 2-4).

WESTERN (COLO.) STATE 69, NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 51: In Las Vegas, N.M., the Cowgirls (3-13, 1-8 RMAC) led by seven at halftime but were outscored by 47-22 the rest of the way in a loss to the Mountainee­rs. Allyah George had 14 points for Highlands.
