The logic of legalizing marijuana is numbing

DO I understand correctly the cannabis zeitgeist?

We are a state plagued by high numbers of DWIs and DWI-related maiming and death. Yet we are preparing to add another mind-altering drug to the social pharmacopeia. The logic is numbing.

Coyote killing contests are deservedly banned

REPUBLICAN REP. Alonzo Baldonado’s (Jan. 25) letter to the Journal attacks our newly elected land commissioner as “inexperienced” because she has banned coyote killing contests on our public lands. To the contrary, Commissioner (Stephanie) Garcia Richard has responded to the voters who find these contests to be despicable and an embarrassment to our state. Hunters, despite what Rep. Baldonado claims, you are not being kept out of state lands, nor is your “right to hunt and fish” being eroded. The ban is only on body-count-for-cash contests. Ethical hunters, do you truly feel these killing contests are right?

We all have a role in reducing waste

I FULLY support the (Albuquerque City Council) effort to ban the use of non-recyclable plastic products in our community. We already use reusable shopping bags and now carry reusable plastic containers for our excess restaurant food.

It’s time to change our habits and stop generating this mountain of non-recyclable plastic waste. For anyone paying attention, the amount of plastic polluting the environment worldwide is really alarming, and all consumers have a duty to reduce this massive waste stream.
