Guy steps up to lead No. 4 Virginia past No. 8 Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Kyle Guy scored 20 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes, to help No. 4 Virginia beat No. 8 North Carolina 69-61 on Monday night.

De’Andre Hunter also had 20 points for the Cavaliers (21-2, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who played with veteran poise down the stretch after trailing for a good chunk of the second half.

The Cavaliers were coming off a second loss this season to No. 2 Duke and arrived in Chapel Hill facing the prospect of their first losing streak of any kind in two years. Yet Guy and his teammates rallied from seven down in the final eight minutes to snap UNC’s seven-game winning streak.

Coby White scored 17 points to lead the Tar Heels (19-5, 9-2).

No. 14 KANSAS 82, TCU 77 (OT): In Fort Worth, Texas, Devon Dotson scored 25 points, including six free throws in the final 40 seconds of overtime, and Kansas beat TCU.

After blowing a 12-point lead in the second half, the Jayhawks (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) never trailed in overtime.

TCU (17-7, 5-6), trying to win consecutiv­e games against Top 25 teams, had a 13-0 run late in regulation and took a 69-65 lead on JD Miller’s two free throws with 2:07 left. The Frogs didn’t score again until overtime.

Women

No. 4 UCONN 97, NO. 11 SOUTH CAROLINA 79: In Hartford, Conn., Napheesa Collier had 31 points, 16 rebounds and six assists to help UConn beat South Carolina. Katie Lou Samuelson added 29 points for the Huskies (22-2).

The victory was the 89th straight at home for the Huskies. That’s the second-longest winning streak in NCAA history, trailing only UConn’s school-record 99-game run.

No. 17 KENTUCKY 68, ALABAMA 53: In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Rhyne Howard scored 23 points with four 3-pointers, Maci Morris added 17 points and Kentucky beat Alabama.

Tatyana Wyatt chipped in with 10 points for Kentucky (20-5, 7-4 Southeaste­rn Conference). .

Megan Abrams scored 16 points for Alabama (11-13, 3-8). No. 23 MICHIGAN STATE 77, INDIANA 61: In East Lansing, Mich., Shay Colley scored a career-high 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting to help Michigan State beat Indiana.

Indiana (17-8, 6-7 Big Ten) beat the Spartans (17-5, 7-5) 68-64 at home on Jan. 6 to open conference play with three consecutiv­e wins but the Hoosiers have lost seven of 10 since.
