NM shutterbugs show their best in juried exhibit

The 10th Annual New Mexico Photographic Art Show is a collage of the fantastical and the natural — the sublime and the surreal. Featuring more than 250 works by 130 New Mexico photographers, the show runs through April 23 in the Fine Arts Gallery at EXPO New Mexico. The juried exhibition contains works selected from more than 400 submissions. Admission is free and all the photographs are for sale.

Nature photographer Pablo Garcia shot “Lake Moraine” on vacation in Canada’s Banff National Park. The Valley of the Ten Peaks orbits the thin, elongated body of water.

“It was basically a stream when an avalanche blocked it hundreds of years ago,” Garcia said. “We could see people on the lake who were canoeing.”

The canoes in the foreground form a ringlet of jewel tones beneath the mammoth mountains.

“I sat down on the edge of the lake to get on the level of the canoes with just a little bit of sky,” Garcia said. “I was looking to find a spot where there weren’t crowds or canoes in the lake.”

Garcia grew up in Juárez, and worked in El Paso, where he bought his first 35mm Pentax camera. A move to Sandia National Laboratories brought him in contact with photographers Keith Bauer and Peter Davies, who taught him about composition and how to work in the field. The trio still take photographic journeys together, most recently to Moab, Utah, Yellowstone and Jackson, Wyo.

John Gilbert started out as a studio photographer shooting high school portraits. He discovered digital manipulation in 2003.
