Discovery of lost siblings brings joy and questions

In 1920, two young girls discovered they had a half-sister and brother they did not know they had.

In Albuquerque, young Kathleen struggled amid poverty, her silent father and her abusive and unpredictable brother Henry. Thrilled to find she has another sister and brother, she vows to find them someday. In Chicago, Clarice grew up amid wealth, idealizes her department store magnate father and adores her sensitive brother, Clay. Headstrong and furious, Clarice believes her mother abandoned her for Kathleen and Henry. Excitement begins when Kathleen leaves home at 17 and places a classified ad in the Chicago Tribune to find Clarice and Clay. Lisa Bear Goldman and illustrator Patrice Schooley will sign “The Gift of Wonder” and “The Proud Little Burro” from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6.

Hawthorn Bolger-Witherspoon will read and discuss “South Valley” at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6.

“South Valley” is Hawthorn’s first book. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Bernalillo County’s South Valley when she was 3. She is bilingual and volunteers at La Plazita Institute, which provides gang intervention resources. She is in ninth grade, plays basketball, competes on the high school mock trial team and loves to draw.
