How it works
Ranked-choice voting — also known as “instant runoff” — would alleviate the need for a separate election. Under the proposal:
All candidates’ names would be placed on the ballot in an order determined by a drawing
Voters would rank each candidate by preference
If no candidate receives at least 50% of first-place votes, the candidate with the fewest first-place votes would be eliminated
The ballots would be retallied, counting the first- and secondpreference votes from each ballot for all candidates not yet eliminated
If no candidate reaches the 50% milestone, the process would continue until one candidate meets the threshold
