MOVIE IS BRINGING 3 BIG NAMES TO NM
Director George Gallo’s latest project comes to Albuquerque in early June
Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro will star in “The Comeback Trail,” which will begin filming in Albuquerque in June.
Director George Gallo is bringing his latest project to New Mexico.
And he’s bringing along a trio of heavy hitters in Hollywood: Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones.
The New Mexico Film Office says Gallo’s “The Comeback Trail” will begin principal photography in early June in Albuquerque.
Other locations include To’hajiilee, Bonanza Creek Ranch outside of Santa Fe and Yrisarri, a former trading post community in Bernalillo County.
“We welcome this Oscar-winning trio of Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman to New Mexico,” said Alicia J. Keyes, secretary of Economic Development Department, in a news release. “We are pleased that ‘The Comeback Trail’ has found New Mexico. We offer experienced crews, a great climate and the best production incentives
in the country.”
In “The Comeback Trail,” De Niro is to play Max Barber, a man in debt to a mob boss, played by Freeman. Barber creates an insurance fraud by casting washed-up, suicidal cowboy/movie star Duke Montana, played by Jones, in a Western with the intention of killing him during the first days of filming.
According to the film office, the production will employ about 75 crew members, 15 actors and about 300 background talent from New Mexico.
With production taking place at numerous locations in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area, the film will use the diverse locations of the state.
“‘The Comeback Trail’ offers a great example of what New Mexico can offer,” said Todd Christensen, NM Film Office director. “From world-class studios to movie ranches and tribal lands, the state will work closely with producers to find the perfect locations.”
According to IMDB.com, James Marsden, Zach Braff and Eddie Griffin are signed onto the project.
Freeman and Jones last teamed up for “Just Getting Started,” which also filmed in New Mexico.
Gallo is known for the films such as “Bad Boys,” “Middle Men” and “29th Street.”
He wrote the 1988 film, “Midnight Run,” starring De Niro. The film will be screened at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Guild Cinema, 3405 Central NE. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Gallo. RSVP is required by visiting eventbrite.com and search “Midnight Run screening.”
