‘Obsessed with music’

LA-based garage rock band The Paranoyds grew up on MTV videos

The Paranoyds grew up grew up on the cusp of the MTV video generation.

It’s part of what made each member of the band want to pursue music.

“It looked so fun,” bassist and vocalist Staz Lindes says. “I think we all grew up obsessed with music, not so much the lifestyle. Being able to travel, I guess for me, it was seeing bands like No Doubt, and it looked like so much fun and everything that came with it. I was trying to get bands together in elementary school.”

Lindez is one-fourth of the Los Angelesbased garage rock band The Paranoyds.

Rounding out the band alongside Lindes are Laila Hashemi, Lexi Funston and David Ruiz.

The band is touring in support of its EP “Hungry Sam.” The band will perform a show tonight at Meow Wolf, where it is opening for Tacocat.

The band finished recording “Hungry Sam” in February, and two songs have been released.

A full-length album will be released in September, and the video for the band’s next single will be released in a couple of weeks.

Lindes says the video process went smoothly.

“Sometimes it’s nice if we don’t chime in,” she says. “It turns into a lot of cooks in the kitchen. We work with the director’s vision, and our input is taken into consideration. It’s about the collaboration in making something that we’re all proud of accomplishing.”

The band has been together for a number of years, and its writing process hasn’t changed much.

Songs are written in many different ways.

One thing is clear — there has to be a majority decision to move forward.

“If one person strongly doesn’t like a song, then we’ll scrap it,” she says. “It’s majority rules. Everybody takes a position. It’s not like one person dictating anything.”

The Paranoyds are looking forward to returning to New Mexico for the show at Meow Wolf.

The last time the band performed in the state, its van broke down.

“Everybody in Santa Fe was trying to help us out by trying to sell the van,” she says. “We had this Uber driver that was super-sweet and understanding in dealing with us. I was so impressed with the people in Santa Fe. It’s really a magical place. I’ve talked to travelers, and there’s something really special about Santa Fe. It’s a place where people came out to support us in more ways than just supporting our music.”
