Padres snap LA winning streak

Play goes on despite earthquake at stadium

-

LOS ANGELES — An earthquake rattled Dodger Stadium in the fourth inning of the team’s game against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

The quake happened while Dodgers second baseman Enriquè Hernàndez was batting. It didn’t appear to affect him or Padres pitcher Eric Lauer.

However, it was obvious to viewers of the SportsNet LA broadcast when the TV picture bounced up and down.

The quake registered an initial magnitude of 7.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There was no announcement by the stadium’s public address announcer.

In the game, San Diego’s Hunter Renfroe broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with a two-out homer to lead the Padres to a 3-2 victory.

It was his 25th homer of the year and ended the Padres’ fivegame losing streak. The Dodgers had won five in a row..

BREWERS 7, PIRATES 6 (10): In Pittsburgh, Lorenzo Cain delivered a go-ahead RBI single off Pittsburgh closer Felipe Vázquez in the top of the 10th inning as Milwaukee rebounded after blowing a five-run lead in the ninth to edge Pittsburgh and snap a three-game losing streak.

The Pirates trailed 6-1 going into the ninth, but rallied to tie it. Adam Frazier’s RBI single got Pittsburgh going. All-Star first baseman Josh Bell followed two batters later with a three-run shot to the right-field seats off Delios Guerra to get Pittsburgh within one. Milwaukee reliever Junior Guerra came on in an attempt to get the final out. His first pitch to Jung Ho Kang ended up in the left-field bleachers to tie the game.

The Brewers, however, bounced back against Vázquez (2-1). DIAMONDBACKS 8, ROCKIES

0: In Phoenix, Christian Walker hit two homers and drove in a career-high five runs, leading Arizona past Colorado.

The Diamondbacks sent 11 batters to the plate in a sixrun fifth inning, highlighted by Walker’s three-run shot off Rockies reliever Jesus Tinoco. Diamondbacks starter Zack Greinke (10-3) got the win in his last start before the All-Star Game.

PHILLIES 7, METS 2: In New York, Jay Bruce hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning off closer Edwin Díaz and Mets manager Mickey Callaway lost an early replay challenge that might have cost him late as Philadelphia beat New York.

Nine days after blowing a save in Philadelphia, Díaz (1-6) allowed J.T. Realmuto’s double and Bruce’s RBI single to start the ninth, which snapped a 2-2 tie. The Phillies poured it on after that, batting around and scoring five runs against Díaz, Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilán.

Philadelphia tied it in the seventh on a close play that Callaway couldn’t challenge. Rhys Hoskins scored on César Hernández’s slow roller toward third, but replays showed catcher Wilson Ramos appeared to tag Hoskins before he touched the plate. The Mets couldn’t ask for a review, however, because Callaway had unsuccessfully used the club’s challenge in the second inning on Todd Frazier’s stolen base attempt. Umpires can’t initiate a crew chief review until the eighth inning. YANKEES 8, RAYS 4 (11): In St. Petersburg, Fla., Aaron Judge hit his second homer of the game leading off the 11th inning and Brett Gardner added a three-run shot as New York beat Tampa Bay.

Judge connected on the first pitch from Ryne Stanek (0-2) to give him nine career multihomer games. The big slugger also went deep in the first against two-way player Brendan McKay.

Aaron Hicks tied it in the eighth with a pinch-hit homer for the Yankees, who used a fiverun 10th to beat the Rays 8-4 on Thursday in the opener of a fourgame series. ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 4

(11): In Washington, Adalberto Mondesi hit a go-ahead single in the 11th inning as Kansas City outlasted Washington to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Nationals, who had won four in a row and eight of their last nine, left 19 men on base — including the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh and 10th innings.

Jonny Venters (0-1), Washington’s fifth reliever, loaded the bases with no outs before striking out Whit Merrifield. However, Mondesi poked a single to left past a drawn-in infield to score a run. Alex Gordon then hit a grounder to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, whose wild throw home allowed two runs to score. ANGELS 5, ASTROS 4: In Houston, Mike Trout hit his AL-leading 26th homer, and Kole Calhoun, Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons also went deep to give Los Angeles a win over Houston.

Calhoun, Ohtani and Simmons all connected off Houston starter Justin Verlander (10-4) as he gave up three home runs for the third time in his last five starts. ORIOLES 4, BLUE JAYS 1: Chris Davis homered and had three RBIs, Dylan Bundy pitched 6⅔ innings of one-run ball to snap a four-start losing streak as Baltimore beat Toronto. TWINS 15, RANGERS 6: In Minneapolis, Jorge Polanco homered on his 26th birthday, and Martin Perez held his former team scoreless until the seventh as Minnesota routed Texas. RED SOX 9, TIGERS 5: In Detroit, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers homered for Boston as the Red Sox beat Detroit. SUSPENSION: Philadelphia outfielder Odúbel Herrera has accepted a suspension for the rest of the season under MLB’s domestic violence policy.

The commissioner’s office announced his decision Friday, two days after domestic assault charges against Herrera in Atlantic City, New Jersey, were dismissed. He had been charged with simple assault and knowingly causing bodily injury stemming from an incident May 27 at the Golden Nugget Casino.
