Bail fix unleashed hell on citizens of NM

-

“PROPOSING AN amendment to article 2, section 13 of the Constitution of New Mexico to protect community safety by granting courts new authority to deny release on bail pending trial for dangerous defendants in felony cases while retaining the right to pretrial release for nondangerous defendants who do not pose a flight risk.” This is the amendment that the Journal stated passed “overwhelmingly” in the 2016 November ballot in (the July 28) front page, over-the-fold news article.

I voted for this amendment, as did almost all of my friends. In fact, the Journal recommended passage. Nowhere in that amendment does it say that career felons, rapists, murders, gang members and practically every other thug in the state would be released on their own recognizance. The New Mexico Supreme court took the amendment and “fixed” it to (its) own agenda. The court and the Democrat Party unleashed hell on the citizens of New Mexico. There is only one way to fix this, but with this state’s voting history, that will never happen ROGER D. HUMMEL Albuquerque
