TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY MARK OSWALD JOURNAL NORTH

Amovie and music are on the bill at the Lensic Thursday night.

“New Mexico Rain: The Story of Bill & Bonnie Hearne,” producer/director Bunne Tomlinson’s documentary on the local country music legends, will be presented on the big screen.

Bill, who’s still going strong, and Bonnie, who died in 2017, both legally blind, parlayed their musical talent into a successful musical career and, as the film shows, their love and tenacity into a marriage that stood the test of time.

Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keene, Michael Martin Murphey and others offer glimpses of Bill and Bonnie’s influence on them personally and on music in general.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with Tomlinson, Bill Hearne and his musician nephew Michael Hearne, followed by a full concert with Bill and Michael.

The tribute event starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $30 at lensic.org, at the Lensic box office at 211 W. San Francisco Street or by calling 988-1234. A free reception before the show offered for a maximum of 100 ticket holders is sold out.

FIESTA FASHION: The New Mexico History Museum will exhibit vintage fiesta dresses during this year’s annual Fiesta de Santa Fe, starting on Friday. Local Santa Fe women, performers and former Fiesta queens donated many of the dresses to become part of the museum’s permanent collection.

“Fiesta patrons, fashionistas and everybody who appreciates vintage clothing will certainly want to check out this selection of the ever-popular fiesta dresses worn by so many in Santa Fe and throughout New Mexico,” said Billy G. Garrett, director of the History Museum.

¡Vámonos a la Fiesta! will be on display through Sept. 9. at the History Museum, open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The museum is at 113 Lincoln Ave., next to the Palace of the Governors.

Regular admission is $12, $7 for New Mexico residents. New Mexico residents enjoy free admission on the first Sunday of each month and Friday evenings 5-7 p.m. Check nmhistorymuseum.org for other free admissions for children and seniors.

BILINGUAL BANTER: Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda come together at Teatro Parguas starting Friday.

“Word Over All: Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda” features works of Whitman and Neruda without any additional narration in an effort to demonstrate an inherent relationship and dialogue between the two.

The production is fully bilingual: Whitman will be translated into Spanish and Neruda will be translated into English. The translations will be projected on a screen above the stage, while actors perform the works in their original languages.

The run starts with 7:30 p.m. shows Friday and Saturday at Teatro Paraguas, 3205 Calle Marie. Tickets $10-$15. Call 424-1601 or go to teatroparaguas. There will also be shows on Sunday, Sept. 1, and Thursday, Sept. 5. through Sunday, Sept. 8. The Sunday shows are at 2 p.m.
