Let’s give Earth a moon shot!

-

THIS LITTLE blue marble is shared by hundreds of millions of us. Can we come to our senses and leave a proper home base for our kids? Can we follow the Native peoples’ example of looking ahead four generations? Then we shall council, all knowing what is at stake.

First of all, this Green New Deal is a mess. While it does contain things that we should have been doing, it gives a giant boost to the Gross Domestic Product, whose growth yields those heat-capturing gasses.

In the second place, after 49 years of Earth days, the people recognize that the Earth needs repairs and nursing back to health. However, it is us who needs the major overhaul! We have unwittingly staffed a hedonistic treadmill of over-consumption that we sweat over and suffer with while keeping it oiled and tracking properly.

That old saying “No pain, no gain” is true in the gym, and has been true for expanding and maintaining our large oversold economy. It also describes the huge changes we face as we staff the global shift into a thriving diversity of affordable lifestyles.

And, finally, can you imagine the shared joy of actually doing the right thing? Worldwide? Clean water for everyone, putting all the bombs away, feeding everyone, schooling that will renew our love for the natural world and acquaint us with the ecological systems that our lives are dependent upon, and presenting the sense of belonging with and contributing to the wellbeing of all life onboard this spaceship, the swimmers and flyers, the four-legged ones, and all us Earthlings.

How to start? First of all, citizens and officials need to acknowledge the damage we are doing to our household. Then gather in small groups, focus on defining and obtaining a stable and thriving future, and do the best job we can. As always, our greatest resource is simply us. Will it be difficult? Yes, as it will be built up (by) altruistic sacrifices. Can we do it? As before when gazing at the moon, “Yes, of course, we can cool it now!”
