APS offers adult education at Title I schools

Albuquerque Public Schools announced free adult basic education courses are available to families with students who attend Title I schools. Schools with high enrollments of low-income students receive Title I funds, according to APS.

Courses for a high school diploma, GED prep, job readiness and life skills are available. The district said in a news release that enrollment is ongoing.

“Classes are held at participating Title I schools, are free of charge and childcare is available,” the district wrote.

STUDENT MUSICIANS JOIN TOURING GROUP: Albuquerque high school musicians will join the professionals at Kiva Auditorium next month.

The Eldorado High School String Quartet will star in “Beatles vs. Stones — A Musical Showdown” on Oct. 12, performing seven songs with the bands, including “Eleanor Rigby” and “As Tears Go By.”

The tribute band battle is in town as part of a tour in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

ACADEMY NAMES HEAD OF SCHOOL: Albuquerque Academy, a private middle and high school in the city, has announced that Julianne Puente will be the seventh Head of School, starting next school year.

The announcement comes after current Head of School Andrew Watson announced plans to retire.

Puente graduated from Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y, Cornell University and Columbia University. Her résumé includes history teacher and college counselor. She also helped establish a new school in Madaba-Manja, Jordan.

ASSISTANT U.S. EDUCATION SECRETARY VISITS NM: Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education Scott Stump visited St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque and Santa Fe Community College this month.

The visit was part of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2019 National Back to School Tour, which aims to spotlight schools that are rethinking education.
