Mumme to run an offense in the XFL
Ex-Lobos, Aggies on league’s draft list
Former New Mexico State football coach Hal Mumme has been named the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Renegades of the XFL, a professional league scheduled to make its return in February.
The XFL announced coaching staffs for its eight franchises on Monday.
Former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is the Renegades’ head coach.
The XFL is returning after having operated for a single season in 2001. The XFL draft is scheduled for Tuesday.
Six former University of New Mexico players appeared on XFL draft lists published last week: defensive lineman Nik D’Avanzo, cornerback SaQwan Edwards, wide receiver Delane Hart-Johnson, offensive lineman Avery Jordan, wide receiver Lamar Jordan (a quarterback at UNM) and running back Jhurell Pressley.
One former New Mexico State player, running back Larry Rose III, and one former Western New Mexico player, wide receiver Treydonte Hill, were listed.
Former Artesia High School quarterback Landry Jones, who starred at Oklahoma and played in the NFL for six years, in August became the first player to sign a contract with the new XFL.
Mumme, 67, was the head coach at NMSU from 2005-08, compiling an 11-38 record. He coached at a total of seven different schools, including four years at Kentucky, compiling an overall record of 142-152-1.
He and Washington State coach Mike Leach are widely considered the originators of the “Air Raid” offense, a widely imitated form of the spread offense that favors the short pass as an alternative to the run.
