No warrant has been issued for Jones’ arrest
Suspended UNM football quarterback accused of indecent exposure.
University of New Mexico quarterback Sheriron Jones has been accused of indecent exposure, an incident that reportedly occurred on campus Friday morning, the day the Lobos left for their game at Wyoming, according to a UNM police department report.
UNM coach Bob Davie announced on Tuesday that Jones, a senior, had been suspended indefinitely from the team, but would not give the reason.
Jones started the game against Wyoming in Laramie on Saturday.
“I talked to him on Monday when I was first made aware of the charges and communicated to him that he was suspended,” Davie said after Wednesday’s practice after learning of a KRQE report. “Obviously it was a very serious accusation, because of that he’s indefinitely suspended from the team. The proper protocol has been followed. The people that make those investigations and make those decisions, it’s in their hands now.”
No warrant has been issued for Jones’ arrest, according to court records. Jones has been summoned to appear at Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court and enter a plea on Nov. 7 per a criminal complaint.
Jones is accused of exposing his genitalia to a woman, who recognized Jones from “social media pictures that she had seen on mutual friends’ profiles,” according to the UNM PD report.
A woman reported to UNM Police that while she was parked inside UNM’s Cornell parking structure a man in a car slowly drove near her car. She said she
was filling out a card for a gift.
When she left her car she noticed the vehicle and the driver there, and the man was staring at her. She said she asked the driver from a distance, “are you good?” She said he responded, “No, can you give me 10 seconds,” or something similar to that, the report reads.
She said she didn’t understand what he meant, so she walked closer and when she got to the open window she saw that the male subject was masturbating. She said she was immediately scared of the situation and turned and walked away, according to the report.
Security footage, according to the report, revealed that the license plate of the vehicle in question was registered to Jones.
Police were not able to identify the man involved via the security video, nor were they able to witness the act described by the woman.
The report was filed on Saturday after police viewed the video.
Then the report was approved on Monday.
UNM Police Department Lt. Tim Stump would not comment on the incident, saying that it remains under investigation.
The incident is reported to have occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The Lobos’ chartered flight to Wyoming was scheduled to leave at 3:30 p.m.
UNM plays its homecoming game on Saturday against Hawaii.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tevaka Tuioti will start for the Lobos, Davie said, a decision that was made on Sunday. In Saturday’s game at Wyoming, Tuioti entered late in the game and promptly led UNM to a touchdown in its 23-10 loss.
The Lobos (2-5, 0-3 Mountain West Conference), who have lost four straight, have two scholarship quarterbacks available in Tuioti and backup Trae Hall, a redshirt freshman. Brandt Hughes, a junior college transfer, started the season opener and suffered a season-ending injury during the first half against Sam Houston State.
Jones, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, started seven games last year when the Lobos went 3-9. He began his college career at Tennessee, where he redshirted and did not see playing time before transferring to Mt. San Jacinto junior college in California. He started three games this season, all losses (Notre Dame, Colorado State, Wyoming). This season, he threw for 500 yards and two touchdowns with seven interceptions, completing 34 of his 76 passes (45%). He ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns.
