Honoring the dead
Marble Brewery Downtown celebrates Día de los Muertos
Marble Brewery is commemorating Día de los Muertos with music, art and altars. The third annual Muertos Fiesta will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the brewery’s Downtown location.
“We’re celebrating Día de los Muertos at Marble because it is important to honor the dead through art, music, food and drink,” Geraldine Lucero, marketing and events coordinator at Marble Brewery, said in an email. “This is a special celebration featuring live music and performances from Jade Masque, Sol De La Noche, Yeztli Tanzt Y Arte and Red Light Cameras.”
Local artists and vendors will host a Muertos Market, and altars will be
displayed for guests to add pictures and candles for loved ones they miss, Lucero said.
“We are converting our north parking lot near the fermentation hall into a market space,” Lucero said. “Local vendors include Two Stoned Betties, Danny Hart, High Desert Flame Works, Ooey Cuy Cuy, Enchanting Soap Collections, Oh Stitch Pleaze and more.”
Artist James Montoya will be creating Muertos-inspired art on the patio that will be up for auction.
Food vendors include Don Choche and Street Food Sensations. Attendees can wash it all down with the special release Cerveza Calavera.
“Cerveza Calavera (was) brewed in remembrance of those who have passed but have not been forgotten,” Lucero said. “This brown lager was inspired by pan de muerto, sweet, spiced bread with subtle hints of anise, cinnamon and orange zest.”
Pan de muerto, also known as pan de los muertos in Mexico, is a type of sweet bread traditionally baked in Mexico during the weeks leading up to Día de los Muertos. The holiday, Day of the Dead in English, is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage.
“To some of us, this holiday is a tradition,” Lucero said. “My mother was born and raised in Mexico, and we always took the time to celebrate our lost loved ones during this holiday. It’s a day to bring the dead back to life through sharing memories, stories, favorite food, music and more. Dead doesn’t have to be final; people will live forever through the power of memories.”
