Honor the lives of deceased loved ones and ancestors during Día de los Muertos at the South Broadway Cultural Center.

“The City is looking forward to hosting the free community event to celebrate Día de los Muertos from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2,” Bree Ortiz, community events division manager, said in an email.

The celebration will feature an art exhibition, ofrendas, artisans, entertainment and more.

“The entire family is invited to enjoy the local entertainment, grab a bite from the food trucks and stroll through the car show,” Ortiz said. “Parents can shop local with a dozen artisans with handcrafted items for sale, while the kids get their faces painted like a calavera (skull).”

Entertainment will include a performance by the Ehecatl Aztec Dancers at 12:05, Mariachi Tradicional at 1 p.m., Ballet Folklorico Fiesta Mexicana at 3:05 p.m. and La Rondalla at 3:50 p.m. There will be a presentation by the Mexican Consulate at 3:05 p.m.

There will be a threatrical

performance of “El Altar de Mi Abuelo” at 2:10 p.m. in the John Lewis Theatre. It is a short bilingual play about ofrendas, according to Ortiz.

“The event will feature ofrendas (offerings/shrines) from local artists honoring their loved ones that have passed,” according to Ortiz. “The art and ofrendas will be on display until Nov. 22 in the center’s gallery.”

Attendees will be able to peruse the traditional and contemporary ofrendas created to honor the deceased. The ofrenda is intended to welcome the deceased to the altar setting. An ofrenda features a collection of objects placed on an altar created for a person who has died. The objects are usually items the person enjoyed in life.
